Sam Rowlands MS for North Wales is calling for urgent action to increase the number of nurses in Wales.
Mr Rowlands, Welsh Conservative and Shadow Minister for Local Government, was commenting after attending the Royal College of Nursing, RCN, Wales event at the Senedd.
He said:
I was delighted to join colleagues at the ‘Listen to Nursing’ event and talk to nurses from North Wales, who worked through the pandemic and continue to provide excellent service.
It was, however, alarming to hear at first-hand about the affects the shortfall in nursing numbers has on existing hardworking staff and worrying to be told about the concerns for patients safety.
It is clear from the RCN’s 2022 Nursing in Numbers report that the Welsh Government needs to do much more to help the NHS fill the 2,900 nurse vacancies and I will continue to raise this issue in the Senedd.
In the report it states that there are not enough registered nurses or nursing staff employed by NHS Wales and this is having a devasting impact on nursing morale.
In the last 10 years the percentage of nursing staff that feel enthusiastic about their job has dropped by 19%. Those that feel they are too busy to provide the level of care they would like has increased by 9%. This shows the mounting pressure nursing staff are facing in Wales
Research also showed that where there are fewer nurses, patients are 26% more likely to die and this rises to 29% following complicated hospital stays.

Sam Rowlands AS yn beirniadu Llywodraeth Cymru am ddiffyg gweithredu i recriwtio mwy o nyrsys
Mae Sam Rowlands, yr AS dros Ogledd Cymru, yn galw am weithredu ar frys er mwyn cynyddu nifer y nyrsys yma yng Nghymru.
Roedd Mr Rowlands, Gweinidog Gwrthblaid y Ceidwadwyr Cymreig ar Lywodraeth Leol, yn ymateb ar ôl mynychu digwyddiad y Coleg Nyrsio Brenhinol, RCN Cymru, yn y Senedd.
Meddai:
Roedd hi'n braf ymuno â chydweithwyr yn nigwyddiad 'Gwrando ar Nyrsio' a siarad â nyrsys o'r Gogledd, a fu'n gweithio gydol y pandemig ac sy'n dal i ddarparu gwasanaeth ardderchog.
Fodd bynnag, roedd hi'n frawychus clywed o lygad y ffynnon am effaith prinder nyrsys ar staff sy'n gweithio mor galed a'r holl bryderon am ddiogelwch cleifion.
Mae adroddiad 'Niferoedd Nyrsio' yr RCN yn 2022 yn profi bod angen i Lywodraeth Cymru wneud llawer mwy i helpu'r GIG i lenwi'r 2,900 o swyddi gweigion, a byddaf yn parhau i godi'r mater hwn yn y Senedd.
Mae'r adroddiad yn dweud nad oes digon o nyrsys cofrestredig na staff nyrsio yn cael eu cyflogi gan GIG Cymru a bod hyn yn cael effaith ofnadwy ar ysbryd nyrsys.
Yn ystod y 10 mlynedd ddiwethaf mae canran y staff nyrsio sy'n teimlo'n frwdfrydig am eu gwaith wedi gostwng 19%. Mae'r rhai sy'n teimlo eu bod yn rhy brysur i ddarparu lefel y gofal yr hoffen nhw wedi cynyddu 9%. Mae hyn yn dangos y pwysau cynyddol sy'n wynebu staff nyrsio yng Nghymru.
Hefyd, dangosodd ymchwil fod cleifion 26% yn fwy tebygol o farw lle mae llai o nyrsys, a bod hyn yn codi i 29% yn dilyn arosiadau cymhleth mewn ysbytai.
