Sam Rowlands, Member of the Welsh Parliament for North Wales, met members of the Welsh Black Cattle Society at a recent event in Cardiff.
Mr Rowlands, a keen supporter of the agricultural industry attended a drop in event at the Senedd to learn more about this famous breed.
He said:
I was delighted to join fellow members to hear more about the history of this very famous cattle which is Wales’ only native breed.
It is vitally important we continue to support the Welsh Black Cattle association which has been supporting this breed for over 100 years.
It was great to be able to meet with society members and breeders alike and learn all about the important role they play today how they can also help with bio diversity. I can also confirm that the meat is very succulent after tasting some of the beef samples!
The story of Welsh Black Cattle is steeped in history and they are among the most ancient indigenous cattle on the British Isles, and have been grazing our lands since pre-Roman times.
At one time the black cattle were the main currency of the time and were treasured as they are equally at home in craggy uplands or lush lowland pastures.
This hardy breed provides high quality meat and milk and has much to offer modern farming systems with its ease of production and award winning succulent meat.
Sam Rowlands AS yn tynnu sylw at bwysigrwydd Gwartheg Duon Cymreig
Cyfarfu Sam Rowlands, yr Aelod o’r Senedd dros Ogledd Cymru, ag aelodau o’r Gymdeithas Gwartheg Duon Cymreig mewn digwyddiad diweddar yng Nghaerdydd.
Roedd Mr Rowlands, sy’n gefnogwr brwd y diwydiant amaethyddol, yn y digwyddiad galw heibio yn y Senedd i ddysgu mwy am y brîd enwog hwn.
Meddai:
Roeddwn i’n falch iawn o ymuno â’m cyd-aelodau i glywed mwy am hanes y gwartheg enwog, sef unig frîd brodorol Cymru.
Mae'n hanfodol bwysig ein bod yn parhau i gefnogi’r gymdeithas Gwartheg Duon Cymreig sydd wedi bod yn cefnogi'r brid hwn ers dros 100 mlynedd.
Roedd hi’n wych gallu cwrdd ag aelodau'r gymdeithas a bridwyr fel ei gilydd a dysgu popeth am y rôl bwysig y maen nhw’n ei chwarae heddiw a sut y gallan nhw hefyd helpu gyda bioamrywiaeth. Gallaf gadarnhau hefyd fod y cig yn flasus iawn ar ôl blasu rhai o'r samplau cig eidion!
Mae hanes Gwartheg Duon Cymreig yn ddiddorol dros ben ac maen nhw ymhlith y gwartheg cynhenid mwyaf hynafol ar Ynysoedd Prydain, ac wedi bod yn pori ein tiroedd ers y cyfnod cyn-Rufeinig.
Ar un adeg, y gwartheg duon oedd prif arian cyfred y cyfnod ac roedden nhw’n cael eu trysori’n fawr am eu bod yn llawn mor gartrefol ar yr ucheldiroedd creigiog ag oedden nhw ar borfeydd ffrwythlon yr iseldir.
Mae'r brîd gwydn hwn yn darparu cig a llaeth o ansawdd uchel ac mae ganddo lawer i'w gynnig i systemau ffermio modern yn sgil hwylustod y gwaith o’i gynhyrchu a blas da y cig arobryn.
