Sam Rowlands, Member of the Welsh Parliament for North Wales, has been seeing at firsthand how a charity carries out its research into cancer.
Mr Rowlands, Shadow Health Minister, recently joined colleagues from the Welsh Parliament at Swansea University to hear all about the work of Cancer Research Wales.
Cancer Research Wales is the independent Welsh Cancer Research charity and as part of their function they fund a laboratory at the university which is run by a company called CanSense.
Mr Rowlands said:
I was delighted to have the opportunity to be shown around the facilities and hear for myself the wonderful work which is being carried out at Swansea University.
We all know about the fantastic job Cancer Research Wales does for the country and it was great to learn more about CanSense and how they are helping to detect bowel cancer early.
It was a fascinating visit and I was pleased to meet with some of the people who work in the lab and hear all about their research.
Since 1966 Cancer Research Wales have been the driving force behind world class cancer research taking place in Wales for the people of Wales.
They have invested more that £30 million in research in universities and hospitals across Wales focusing on the needs and priorities of the Welsh population.
CanSense is diagnosing bowel cancer early by offering a pioneering solution to a global problem, aiming to transform patient treatment and outcomes worldwide through the early detection of cancer.
Utilising the power of laser spectroscopy and AI, their technology introduces a contemporary non-invasive blood test, a liquid biop.
Bowel cancer, is the third most common cancer in the world and is responsible for around 10% of all cancer diagnoses and is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide.
Detecting bowel cancer in its early stages allows for the most effective treatment, leading to the best outcomes and significantly improving lives.
Sam Rowlands AS yn tynnu sylw at waith Ymchwil Canser Cymru
Mae Sam Rowlands, Aelod o’r Senedd dros Ogledd Cymru, wedi bod yn gweld dros ei hun sut mae elusen yn cynnal ei hymchwil i ganser.
Ymunodd Mr Rowlands, Gweinidog Iechyd yr Wrthblaid dros y Ceidwadwyr Cymreig, â chydweithwyr o’r Senedd ym Mhrifysgol Abertawe yn ddiweddar i glywed popeth am waith Ymchwil Canser Cymru.
Ymchwil Canser Cymru yw’r elusen ymchwil canser annibynnol yng Nghymru ac fel rhan o'u swyddogaeth maen nhw’n ariannu labordy yn y brifysgol sy'n cael ei redeg gan gwmni o'r enw CanSense.
Meddai Mr Rowlands:
Roeddwn i’n falch iawn o gael y cyfle i weld y cyfleusterau a chlywed am y gwaith gwych sy'n cael ei wneud ym Mhrifysgol Abertawe.
Rydyn ni i gyd yn gwybod am y gwaith gwych y mae Ymchwil Canser Cymru yn ei wneud dros y wlad ac roedd yn wych dysgu mwy am CanSense a sut mae’r cwmni’n helpu i ganfod canser y coluddyn yn gynnar
Roedd yn ymweliad hynod ddiddorol ac roeddwn i’n falch o gael cwrdd â rhai o'r bobl sy'n gweithio yn y labordy a chlywed am eu hymchwil.
Ers 1966 mae Ymchwil Canser Cymru wedi bod yn sbarduno ymchwil canser o'r radd flaenaf sy'n digwydd yng Nghymru ar gyfer pobl Cymru.
Maen nhw wedi buddsoddi mwy na £30 miliwn mewn ymchwil mewn prifysgolion ac ysbytai ledled Cymru gan ganolbwyntio ar anghenion a blaenoriaethau poblogaeth Cymru.
Mae CanSense yn gwneud diagnosis cynnar o ganser y coluddyn trwy gynnig ateb arloesol i broblem fyd-eang, gyda'r nod o drawsnewid triniaeth a chanlyniadau cleifion ledled y byd trwy ganfod canser yn gynnar.
Gan ddefnyddio pŵer sbectrosgopeg laser a Deallusrwydd Artiffisial, mae eu technoleg yn cyflwyno prawf gwaed anfewnwthiol cyfoes, biop hylifol.
Canser y coluddyn yw'r trydydd canser mwyaf cyffredin yn y byd ac mae'n gyfrifol am tua 10% o'r holl ddiagnosau canser. Dyma'r ail brif achos o farwolaethau sy'n gysylltiedig â chanser ledled y byd.
Mae canfod canser y coluddyn yn ei gyfnodau cynnar yn golygu bod y driniaeth yn fwy effeithiol, ac mae hynny yn ei dro’n arwain at y canlyniadau gorau a gwella bywydau yn sylweddol.
