Sam Rowlands, Member of the Welsh Parliament for North Wales, is delighted to see Wrexham University offering young people more apprenticeship opportunities.
Wrexham University has announced a February 2025 intake of fully funded degree apprenticeships in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Low Carbon.
Mr Rowlands, a keen supporter of apprenticeship schemes said:
I am absolutely delighted with this news. One of the routes to tackling economic inactivity is having that well-trained workforce. And for younger people, in particular, a large part can be done through apprenticeships, which provide a great way to learn a trade and genuine skills that they can use throughout their working life.
I recently raised the issue in the Senedd as I was concerned that the range of degree apprenticeships on offer in Wales was poor compared with England.
I have also had discussions with the Vice-Chancellor of Wrexham University, and met with the Royal College of Occupational Therapists, who were both very clear that degree apprenticeships can make a big difference.
The fully funded degree apprenticeships are designed to help businesses upskill their staff and support industry workers in obtaining a degree qualification. These programmes offer a unique blend of academic learning and hands-on experience without financial cost to the studying individual.
With funding provided and participants needing only one day-release per week to attend sessions on campus, businesses can be involved in this initiative without bearing costly tuition expenses, making it an attractive option for companies aiming to foster internal growth and innovation.
Dr Martyn Jones, Programme Leader in Engineering Degree Apprenticeships and Senior Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering at Wrexham University, said:
The Degree Apprenticeship provision at Wrexham University has been designed with industry to meet their needs and also to develop staff into becoming more independent and confident in their knowledge and skills.
Our programmes provide fully funded Bachelor’s level qualifications and give apprentices the opportunity to make a difference in their workplace whilst developing technical and practical understanding that is needed by industry.
Applications are now open for eligible businesses, with limited spaces available. Candidates should be current employees with potential for growth in engineering or sustainable roles.
Interested organisations are encouraged to apply as soon as possible by contacting Chloe Huxley, Business Development Partner at Wrexham University’s Enterprise Team, by emailing: [email protected]

Sam Rowlands AS yn croesawu prentisiaethau gradd wedi'u hariannu'n llawn yn y Gogledd
Mae Sam Rowlands, Aelod o’r Senedd dros Ogledd Cymru, yn falch iawn o weld Prifysgol Wrecsam yn cynnig mwy o gyfleoedd i bobl ifanc wneud prentisiaethau.
Mae Prifysgol Wrecsam wedi cyhoeddi y bydd prentisiaethau gradd wedi'u hariannu'n llawn yn dechrau ym mis Chwefror 2025 mewn Peirianneg Fecanyddol, Peirianneg Drydanol, a Charbon Isel.
Meddai Mr Rowlands, cefnogwr brwd cynlluniau prentisiaethau:
Rwy'n falch iawn o glywed y newyddion yma. Un o'r llwybrau tuag at fynd i'r afael ag anweithgarwch economaidd yw cael gweithlu sydd wedi'i hyfforddi'n dda. Ac i bobl iau, yn arbennig, gellir gwneud rhan fawr o hyn trwy brentisiaethau, sy'n ffordd wych o ddysgu crefft a sgiliau go iawn y gallant eu defnyddio trwy gydol eu bywyd gwaith.
Fe godais y mater yn y Senedd yn ddiweddar gan fy mod yn poeni bod y dewis o brentisiaethau gradd sydd ar gael yng Nghymru yn wael o'i gymharu â Lloegr.
Rwyf hefyd wedi cynnal trafodaethau gydag Is-Ganghellor Prifysgol Wrecsam, ac wedi cyfarfod â Choleg Brenhinol y Therapyddion Galwedigaethol, a oedd ill dau yn glir iawn y gall prentisiaethau gradd wneud gwahaniaeth mawr.
Mae'r prentisiaethau gradd a ariennir yn llawn wedi'u cynllunio i helpu busnesau i uwchsgilio eu staff a chefnogi gweithwyr yn y diwydiant i ennill cymhwyster gradd. Mae'r rhaglenni hyn yn cynnig cyfuniad unigryw o ddysgu academaidd a phrofiad ymarferol heb gost ariannol i'r unigolyn sy'n astudio.
Gyda chyllid yn cael ei ddarparu a’r angen i ryddhau cyfranogwyr o’r gwaith un diwrnod yr wythnos yn unig i fynychu sesiynau ar y campws, gall busnesau fod yn rhan o'r fenter hon heb ysgwyddo costau dysgu costus, felly maent yn opsiwn deniadol i gwmnïau sydd am feithrin twf ac arloesedd mewnol.
Meddai Dr Martyn Jones, Arweinydd Rhaglen Prentisiaethau Gradd Peirianneg ac Uwch Ddarlithydd mewn Peirianneg Fecanyddol ym Mhrifysgol Wrecsam:
Mae'r ddarpariaeth Prentisiaethau Gradd ym Mhrifysgol Wrecsam wedi'i chynllunio gyda’r diwydiant i ddiwallu eu hanghenion a hefyd i ddatblygu staff i fod yn fwy annibynnol a hyderus yn eu gwybodaeth a'u sgiliau.
Mae ein rhaglenni'n darparu cymwysterau lefel Baglor wedi'u hariannu'n llawn ac yn rhoi cyfle i brentisiaid wneud gwahaniaeth yn eu gweithle tra'n datblygu dealltwriaeth dechnegol ac ymarferol sydd ei hangen ar ddiwydiant.
Mae ceisiadau bellach ar agor i fusnesau cymwys, gyda lleoedd cyfyngedig ar gael. Dylai ymgeiswyr fod yn weithwyr cyfredol sydd â photensial i dyfu mewn rolau peirianneg neu gynaliadwy.
Anogir sefydliadau sydd â diddordeb i wneud cais cyn gynted â phosibl trwy gysylltu â Chloe Huxley, Partner Datblygu Busnes yn Nhîm Menter Prifysgol Wrecsam, drwy anfon e-bost at: [email protected]
