Sam Rowlands MS for North Wales has welcomed an initiative to give a helping hand to residents living in rural areas.
Mr Rowlands, Conservative member of the Welsh Parliament, was commenting after Denbighshire County Council said they were relaunching its rural community car scheme in partnership with the South Denbighshire Community Partnership.
He said:
I am delighted to see this initiative, to improve transport for people in rural areas, starting up again. It is a wonderful scheme and a great help to those residents who struggle to access local facilities such as going to the shops or attending a doctor’s appointment.
It is not always possible to travel by bus to certain areas and the community car will be a lifeline for many.
It is good to see there are plans to expand this very worthwhile service to cover more rural areas in the south of the county which means more volunteers would be needed.
I would urge anyone who may be interested in helping to get in touch with the South Denbighshire Community Partnership.
Since its launch in 1979, the scheme has steadily declined in terms of both users and particularly volunteers. The business plan for the rejuvenated scheme aims to see the re-establishment of volunteers in a much wider area.
Margaret Sutherland MBE, Chief Executive Officer at SDCP, commented,
We are delighted to be working with Denbighshire County Council on this project. It is one of a growing number of initiatives we are delivering in partnership with Denbighshire. This already includes delivering some transport, in the Edeyrnion area.
We now have a bank of considerable experience from which over the coming months we aim to use to launch the community car scheme over a much wider area.
Any volunteers who may be able to help should contact the SDCP on 01490 266004 for a chat and as for Maggie Harding. Volunteers are partly compensated for their mileage at the current maximum HMRC mileage reimbursement rate.
