Sam Rowlands MS for North Wales is calling for urgent action to stamp out all forms of racism in Wales.
Mr Rowlands, Shadow Minister for Local Government, is calling on the First Minister to urge universities to adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance's definition of antisemitism.
Speaking in the Senedd, he asked Mark Drakeford what Welsh Government were doing to eradicate antisemitism in Wales.
He said:
I am sure all members agree that antisemitism is abhorrent to us all, and all efforts must be made to ensure that this and all forms of racism are stamped out in Wales.
As the First Minister will know, back in May 2017, Welsh Government adopted the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance's definition of antisemitism. Nevertheless, I do find it deeply concerning that the majority of universities in Wales still have not adopted this definition for themselves
While you may not have direct control over universities in Wales, the Government does provide significant funding, and, as First Minister, you have a significant role in setting the tone and expectation of how people, public bodies and publicly funded organisations present themselves here in Wales. You have a significant role in setting the tone and expectation of how people, public bodies and publicly funded organisations present themselves here in Wales.
Mr Rowlands called on the First Minister to urge universities in Wales to adopt the IHRA definition of antisemitism.
Mark Drakeford said it was his expectation that no public body in Wales tolerates antisemitism, and that the Welsh Government were drawing this matter to the attention of universities across Wales.
Sam Rowlands AS yn galw ar y Prif Weinidog i annog prifysgolion i fabwysiadu diffiniad yr IHRA o wrth-semitiaeth
Mae Sam Rowlands, AS Gogledd Cymru, yn galw am weithredu ar frys i ddileu pob math o hiliaeth yng Nghymru.
Mae Mr Rowlands, Gweinidog yr Wrthblaid dros Lywodraeth Leol, yn galw ar y Prif Weinidog i annog prifysgolion i fabwysiadu diffiniad Cynghrair Ryngwladol Cofio'r Holocost o wrth-semitiaeth.
Wrth siarad yn y Senedd, gofynnodd i Mark Drakeford beth roedd Llywodraeth Cymru yn ei wneud i ddileu gwrth-semitiaeth yng Nghymru.
Meddai:
Rwy'n siŵr bod pob aelod yn cytuno bod gwrth-semitiaeth yn wrthun i ni i gyd, ac mae'n rhaid gwneud pob ymdrech i sicrhau bod hyn a phob math o hiliaeth yn cael eu dileu yng Nghymru.
Fel y gŵyr y Prif Weinidog, 'nôl ym mis Mai 2017, fe wnaeth Llywodraeth Cymru fabwysiadu diffiniad Cynghrair Ryngwladol Cofio'r Holocost o wrth-semitiaeth. Serch hynny, rwy'n poeni nad yw'r rhan fwyaf o brifysgolion Cymru wedi mabwysiadu'r diffiniad hwn o hyd.
Er nad oes gennych reolaeth uniongyrchol dros brifysgolion yng Nghymru, mae'r Llywodraeth yn darparu cyllid sylweddol, ac, fel Prif Weinidog, mae gennych rôl bwysig i osod y naws a’r disgwyliadau o ran sut mae pobl, cyrff cyhoeddus a sefydliadau a ariennir yn gyhoeddus yn cyflwyno eu hunain yma yng Nghymru.
Galwodd Mr Rowlands ar y Prif Weinidog i annog prifysgolion yng Nghymru i fabwysiadu diffiniad yr IHRA o wrth-semitiaeth.
Dywedodd Mark Drakeford ei fod yn disgwyl na fyddai unrhyw gorff cyhoeddus yng Nghymru yn goddef gwrth-semitiaeth, a bod Llywodraeth Cymru yn tynnu sylw prifysgolion y wlad at hyn.
