Sam Rowlands MS for North Wales has called on the Welsh Government to do more to help children and young people suffering with migraine.
Speaking in the Senedd, ending a debate on ‘Impact of migraine on children and young people’ Mr Rowlands, Shadow Minister for Local Government said he wanted to see more support for the sufferers.
He said:
Among a number of statistics, one that really struck me was the simple fact that it's one in 10 children and young people who live with migraine. Of course, this has a significant impact on their day-to-day lives, along with their time in school.
If a child suffers from migraines, this can often lead to children struggling to complete to their schoolwork, showing that, without proper support, migraines can severely impact educational attainment.
Research by the Migraine Trust has suggested that education and health professionals, regretfully, don't often understand migraines. It is those professionals perhaps, who sometimes don't have access to the training and resources to effectively support children and young people who are impacted by migraines.
Now is the time to see Welsh Government working with organisations like the Migraine Trust and representative bodies for schools, health services and parents and carers in whatever forum works best.
We need to see the migraine guidance strengthened and training provided to support and accommodate young people impacted by migraines.
We also provide resources for parents and carers of children living with migraines and enable children and young people to learn how to take control of their own care at the same time.
Sam Rowlands AS yn galw am fwy o gefnogaeth i blant a phobl ifanc sy'n dioddef o feigryn
Mae Sam Rowlands AS Gogledd Cymru wedi galw ar Lywodraeth Cymru i wneud mwy i helpu plant a phobl ifanc sy'n dioddef o feigryn.
Wrth siarad yn y Senedd yn ystod dadl 'Effaith meigryn ar blant a phobl ifanc', dywedodd Mr Rowlands, Gweinidog yr Wrthblaid ar Lywodraeth Leol ei fod am weld mwy o gefnogaeth i ddioddefwyr.
Meddai:
Ymysg yr ystadegau niferus, un wnaeth fy nharo i go iawn oedd y ffaith syml bod un o bob 10 o blant a phobl ifanc yn byw gyda meigryn. Wrth gwrs, mae hyn yn cael effaith sylweddol ar eu bywydau o ddydd i ddydd, ynghyd â'u hamser yn yr ysgol.
Os yw plentyn yn dioddef o feigryn, mae'n gallu arwain at fethu cwblhau ei waith ysgol - gan brofi bod meigryn yn gallu cael effaith ddifrifol ar gyrhaeddiad addysgol, heb y cymorth cywir.
Mae ymchwil gan y Migraine Trust wedi awgrymu nad gweithwyr addysg ac iechyd proffesiynol yn deall meigryn yn iawn. Y gweithwyr proffesiynol hynny efallai nad oes ganddynt fynediad at yr adnoddau na'r hyfforddiant i helpu plant a phobl ifanc sy'n cael eu heffeithio gan feigryn.
Mae'n bryd i Lywodraeth Cymru gydweithio â sefydliadau fel y Migraine Trust a chyrff cynrychioliadol ar gyfer ysgolion, gwasanaethau iechyd a rhieni a gofalwyr ym mha bynnag fforwm sy'n gweithio orau.
Mae angen cryfhau'r canllawiau a'r hyfforddiant sydd ar gael er mwyn rhoi cymorth ac arweiniad i bobl ifanc sy'n cael eu heffeithio gan feigryn.
Hefyd, mae angen darparu adnoddau i rieni a gofalwyr plant sy'n byw gyda meigryn a helpu plant a phobl ifanc i ddysgu sut i gymryd rheolaeth o'u gofal eu hunain yr un pryd.
