Sam Rowlands MS for North Wales has been seeing at first-hand outdoor education facilities available in North Wales.
Mr Rowlands visited Plas Menai, the National Outdoor Centre for Wales, near y Felinheli, to discuss his Outdoor Education Bill which is progressing through the Welsh Parliament.
He said:
It was great to visit the team at Plas Menai and see for myself what was being offered at the residential centre. It was fantastic to see the facilities and opportunities they provide in delivering outdoor education which leads to long-lasting benefits for our future generations.
As everyone knows, I passionately believe in outdoor education for all our young people yet sadly, too many of them do not get the opportunity to participate.
I have an aspiration that all children in Wales should be given access to an Outdoor Education residential visit at least once in their school career, regardless of where they live and their family background.
I was very pleased when fellow MSs voted to set aside time for my Outdoor Education Bill to be debated further, and I now look forward to making sure it becomes a reality.
Its aim is to move residential outdoor education from an enrichment activity to an entitlement within Wales’ curriculum.
During his visit, Sam met with people from the Outdoor Partnership and Plas Menai and discussed the real benefits of offering every child the opportunity of attending places like the centre.
Plas Menai, is the National Outdoor Centre for Wales and is owned by Sport Wales and managed by Legacy Leisure to ignite a lifetime passion and participation in outdoor activities.
The Centre has been inspiring people to experience the outdoors for over 35 years, and prides itself on its professional, friendly and flexible approach to all customers.
It is perfectly situated for the ultimate outdoor adventure, on the banks of the Menai Strait and only a short drive from the Snowdonia National Park. It offers activities for all ages, courses and training in many different watersports, welcomes school trips and youth groups, and is also available for Corporate, Training and Conference, meetings and events.
